Simeon Glance

I enjoy capturing the world in a focused and intriguing way, and I want my work to evoke a sense of curiosity and awe from the viewer. The artistic medium through which I express this is photography. Landscapes allow me to not only see something beautiful but to transport myself back to the time and place that I took the photograph. I highlight the architecture, scenery, and minutiae that my current location has to offer. I take photos because they give me the ability to freeze and keep the moments where I saw something peculiar, nicely lit, or that will never happen again.I love to work in color because it bridges a particular gap between the viewer and the subject matter that exists in black-and-white work. When looking at a black-and-white image it feels as if you are seeing through a camera staring at the past. When viewing something in color it’s as if you’re seeing the present through not a lens but your eyes.

My artistic process is simple: I take notice of my surroundings and when I see something I like, I stop, find my shot, expose, and I’ve got a picture. Oftentimes I take more than one image in a particular spot, searching for the perfect angle or darkening the exposure a bit. Later, I choose the image that most perfectly represents that moment. I find inspiration in the work of Michael Wolf. His geometric compositions of buildings inspire my architectural work. Additionally, Park Sung Jin’way of framing his subjects such that they are the focus and yet don’t fill the frame inspires me to experiment with my compositions.

A Brooklyn-based photographer from Chicago, Simeon Glance goes to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School. He's in the eleventh grade, and he started and leads his school’s photography club. He’s also involved in various activities around his school, such as the newspaper, band, debate, and much more. In his spare time he loves to produce music and sometimes even rap, as well as biking and running, especially when the weather is nice. As a career he’d love to start a product photography business and perhaps branch out into other fields. With all the newfound time from running his own business, he’ll be relaxing and enjoying the heat of summer, which is his favorite season.
