Madison Thigpen-Gray

I take photographs to capture what memory may one day forget—emotion and fleeting moments. I often walk through my neighborhood, camera in hand, photographing my friends, strangers, and small details that catch my eye. I’m drawn to taking portraits when people least expect it—when  fear, joy and determination flash across their face, it’s honest and deeply felt.

Madison Thigpen-Gray is a sophomore at Humanities Preparatory Academy and lives in Manhattan. Expanding the Walls is the first program she has participated in due to the Covid-19 pandemic’s effect on youth socialization, and it has been exciting because of her interest in learning photography since age ten. Expanding the Walls and photography have taught her the importance of patience and organization. Aside from photography, Madison’s interests include traveling, working with children, makeup, and reading. Music really inspires her, and she associates her photographs with specific songs.
