Joel Angel Sebastian

Age: 16 CHAH (Community Health Academy of the Heights)Through creating works of art, I have experimented with many different mediums and explored a number of topics. One medium that is fairly new to me is photography. In participating in this program and experimenting with a camera, I have been able to find a new way to express myself. When I take pictures, I usually don't have a story to tell because I want the viewer to come up with their own narrative. I played around with vantage points and emphasis to be able to bring out multiple perspectives: from micro to macro, to creating emphasis on the subject, to the use of leading lines and juxtaposition to tell a story. I wanted to express these ideas in ways that tie to the work of artists Texas Isaiah, Carrie Mae Weems, and Jamel Shabazz. All their works share a simple yet complex feeling that leaves viewers awestruck. Their pieces have a sense of meaning and empowerment, and that's what I want the viewer to feel.
